Ausable Theater brings back Julia Gleich & Dancers!

The Ausable Theater is pleased to bring Julia Gleich & Dancers, the Brooklyn based contemporary ballet company, back for a week-long residency. A free public studio performance will be held Friday, August 7, at 6:30, hosted in collaboration with Tahawus Cultural Center, 14234 Rte 9N, Main Street, Au Sable Forks. Seating is limited. Gleich Dances, an integral part of the non-profit collaborative arts organization Norte Maar, is a Brooklyn based contemporary ballet company focused on collaborations in contemporary ballet, recognizing and at times invoking the ballet relic of the past while bringing the tools of the form into contemporary contexts, creating a company identity which looks more like the people we might find next to us on the subway, exposing gender limitations, often using pointework as a tool for both men and women. Known for collaborations with visual artists, composers, and designers, including couture design studio Morgane Le Fay, Gleich Dances feature strong ensemble work with a narrative factor, often creating collective experiences from a series of individual interpretations of singular figures.
This marks the second time the company has been in residence sponsored by the Ausable Theater.

Kara Chan / IG: @_karachan
Kara Chan is a New York City based freelance dance artist & dance educator, originally from Vancouver, Canada. She is an original Broadway cast member of Tony Award winning production Illinoise, choreographed by Justin Peck. Other performance credits include Twyla Tharp Dance, Pam Tanowitz Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, Janis Brenner & Dancers, Dance Heginbotham, Isaac Mizrahi’s Peter & The Wolf, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company (Artemis in Athens), among many others. A BFA graduate from The Juilliard School, Kara was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” for 2020. Kara has danced and performed with Gleich Dances since 2015.

Adrienne de la Fuente is the Executive Director and company artist of Exit12 Dance Company, whose mission is to heal veterans, educate civilians, and advocate for veterans’ issues through the power of the arts. Originally from California, Adrienne moved to NYC to train at The Ailey School while simultaneously earning her B.A. in French Studies and Philosophy with a minor in Spanish at Fordham University. Beyond Exit12, Adrienne has danced with the Brooklyn Ballet, JUNTOS Collective, SpectorDance, and numerous New York-based choreographers as a freelancer. This is the first time Adrienne has appeared with Gleich Dances.

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Annie Freeman is a New York City based freelance artist. She trained at Next Generation Ballet and Indianapolis Ballet before joining Minnesota Ballet. Since relocating to New York, she has built a freelance career touring with Ballets With a Twist in Cocktail Hour: The Show and collaborating with Gleich Dances, Minnie Lane, Finn Wolfhard, and others. Annie has danced and performed with Gleich Dances since 2023.

Sean Scantlebury is a performer and teacher in modern, ballet, and contemporary dance. Born in Barbados, he moved to New York City at age eight to study at the New York City Public School for Dance, later performing ten seasons with Eliot Feld's Ballet Tech at the Joyce Theater. Since joining Battery Dance in 2003, he has performed, taught, and led Dancing to Connect workshops in over 45 countries. He's been a guest artist for companies including Quorum Ballet, Sutra Dance Theatre, and several Minneapolis troupes. He has taught at the Martha Graham School and NYC public schools. In 2017, Dance.com named him one of 15 Black dancers changing the world. This is the first time Sean has appeared with Gleich Dances.
